EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
